Research indicates climate change must be declared a global health emergency

Berlin and Brandenburg are in for a stretch of changeable autumn weather, with bands of rain crossing the region on Wednesday before drier, though still cloudy, conditions take hold later in the week, the German Weather Service, known as the DWD, said.
According to the forecaster, clouds and rain will move across the two states on Wednesday in a narrow band travelling from west to east. Skies are expected to clear intermittently afterward, allowing for brief spells of sunshine between the showers. Daytime highs are forecast to range between 11 and 15 degrees Celsius.
The unsettled pattern is set to continue into the overnight hours. The DWD said clouds will build up again after nightfall, bringing a renewed chance of light rain. Temperatures are expected to drop sharply overnight, falling to between 6 and 2 degrees Celsius depending on location.
Conditions are due to improve somewhat on Thursday, when the rain is expected to clear out of the region. The DWD forecast local breaks in the cloud cover and said the day should remain largely dry, with highs again reaching 11 to 13 degrees. That improvement will not last long, however. Overnight, forecasters expect fog and high fog to form alongside the clearer patches, with temperatures falling to as low as 4 degrees.
By Friday, cloud cover is expected to return across much of the region. The DWD said some areas could see overcast, foggy and dreary conditions persist through the entire day. Daytime temperatures are forecast to hold steady at 11 to 13 degrees before dropping again overnight to around 3 degrees in places.
The shifting conditions are typical for the season, as the region transitions through the back half of autumn, with cooler nights and a mix of rain, cloud and brief sunny intervals. Forecasters have not issued any weather warnings in connection with the rain expected on Wednesday, and the precipitation is not expected to be heavy enough to cause flooding or significant disruption.
Residents commuting through the region on Wednesday may encounter wet roads as the band of rain pushes eastward, though the DWD described the precipitation as passing through in a relatively narrow strip rather than blanketing the entire area at once. The intermittent sunshine expected later in the day could offer brief relief before clouds thicken again overnight.
Thursday's drier stretch is likely to be the most favourable window of the week for outdoor activity, with local sunny breaks expected alongside daytime highs similar to those recorded earlier in the week. The formation of fog and high fog overnight into Friday, however, could affect visibility in some areas during the early morning hours, a common feature of autumn weather in the region as temperatures drop and moisture lingers near the ground.
Friday's forecast points to a return to more subdued conditions, with overcast and foggy skies expected to dominate in parts of Berlin and Brandenburg for much of the day. The DWD's outlook suggests temperatures will remain within a similar range to the rest of the week, hovering in the low teens during the day before falling toward the middle single digits overnight.
The alternating pattern of rain, cloud and brief sunshine reflects the kind of variable weather typically seen in the region during this point in the autumn season, as weather systems moving in from the west bring repeated rounds of moisture followed by short dry interludes. No extreme temperature swings or severe weather events are expected over the period covered by the forecast.
The DWD's regional forecast for Berlin and Brandenburg is updated regularly and can shift as weather systems develop, though the broad trend of mixed rain and cloud with occasional sun is expected to persist through the end of the week.
